A Dorothy Parker title now on Audible!

I can't resist a little Dorothy Parker now and then!  My latest recording on Audible is Men I'm Not Married To by the aforementioned Dorothy Parker.  This was produced in cooperation with Spoken Realms

"In this story, by American writer Dorothy Parker, a woman gives a laundry list of men she's not married to. She also convincingly states the reasons why she is not and would not want to be married to the various men. Parker's wit and humor shine through as the eccentricities and foibles of the men are described."

A little Dorothy Parker between books!

My recording of a short story by Dorothy Parker was just released for sale on Audible.  I've always loved reading quotes of her bon mots and was happy to narrate a longer piece by her.

From Audible:
"Mr. and Mrs. Wheelock live with their five-year old daughter in a small house in a tidy suburb. Although they present the picture of a happy little family, the old adage "appearances can be deceiving" could certainly apply to their household. This was American author and celebrated wit Dorothy Parker's first published short story."

My latest recording --- an old-fashioned mystery!

My latest recording just went live on Audible this week.  It's called The Woman in the Alcove by Anna Katharine Green.  I love an old-fashioned detective mystery and this was a fun one to record.

During a high society party set in New York City in the early 1900s, a beautiful woman is murdered and her precious diamond stolen. A young woman attending the party had just accepted a marriage proposal from a handsome young man. Unfortunately, the young man is the prime suspect in the murder due to circumstantial evidence. From there, the story takes many twists and turns before the identity of the killer is finally revealed.

Anna Katharine Green was one of the first writers of detective fiction in the US and was known for the legal accuracy of her stories.  She's probably one of the best mystery writers that too few people know about.

Another classic for sale on Audible!

My recording of Edith Wharton's Bunner Sisters went on sale on Audible yesterday via Listen 2 a Book.

Ann Eliza and Evelina Bunner are two unmarried sisters who own a small notions shop in a shabby section of New York City circa 1900. The older sister, Ann Eliza, buys a small clock for her sister's birthday from a tiny shop and meets the owner, a German immigrant named Herman Ramy. Once Mr. Ramy enters their lives, things begin to change in ways that neither sister could have imagined. What seems like a simple story is one of love, longing, selfishness, self-sacrifice, missed opportunities, and the unfairness of life for poor women, particularly those over 30 during this period.

Love the classics!

My Kate Chopin short story collection now on Audible

Six short stories that I recorded by Kate Chopin were released as a collection last week on Audible.

American Kate Chopin, now considered an early feminist, was a prolific writer of short stories in addition to two novels. Most of her stories were set in Louisiana, where she moved after marrying. Characters in her stories are as varied as her themes. Her use of irony and her ability to write so convincingly of characters from diverse backgrounds are hallmarks of her work. This collection includes The Kiss, The Unexpected, An Egyptian Cigarette, The Locket, The Blind Man, and Her Letters.

This collection was published under two different titles:  Kate Chopin: Six Short Stories and Six Short Stories by Kate Chopin.  It can be found under either title on Audible.  Or you can click here to listen to a sample/purchase.

Another Kate Chopin Short Story for Sale on Audible

Yesterday, my sixth recording of a Kate Chopin short story went live on Audible.  The Locket is set during the Civil War.

From Audible:
"A young Confederate soldier is given a solid gold locket before he heads to war. He and the woman who gave it to him are passionately in love and long for the time when they can be together. The locket is noticed by some of the other soldiers and plays an important part in what transpires as battle looms over their camp."

"An Egyptian Cigarette" now available on Audible!

My recording of Kate Chopin's short story, An Egyptian Cigarette, went on sale today on Audible.

A woman is visiting a friend who travels widely, and he offers her a package of Egyptian cigarettes he received as a gift while in Cairo. The package has never been opened and has no print of any kind to indicate a brand, its origin, or its ingredients. The woman decides to try one of the cigarettes in the man's private smoking room. Her experience when she smokes one of the cigarettes shakes her to her core.

I plan to record one more of Chopin's short stories to be released as singles and then all six I've narrated will be released as a compilation.  To listen to a sample or to purchase, head to Audible here.

Recording update

My latest audiobook just debuted on Audible  --  Sanctuary by Edith Wharton.

Young bride-to-be Kate Orme discovers something disturbing about the character of the man she is to marry shortly before the wedding. Years later, after raising their son, Kate realizes that he, too, is now faced with a decision that will reflect upon his ethics and scruples. Will all the time she spent instilling values into her son be enough to keep him from behaving as his father would?  Edith Wharton addresses that age-old question of nature vs. nurture.

The book can be purchased from Audible here.

Next up is a science fiction short story called Invisible Death by Anthony Pelcher.  This recording is now in post-production and should be available shortly.  Here's a summary:  Darius Darrow, a brilliant scientist and inventor, died suddenly and violently in his home laboratory while his chemist wife, Susan, was nearby.  No one was  seen entering or leaving the home during the crime.  The
perpetrator stole Darrow's latest invention while committing the murder.  The police and the head of the company who paid royalties on some of Darrow's patents begin the search for his killer.  Death threats in the form of letters sent to the company head begin arriving after the murder demanding money or there will be more killings.   What had Darrow invented that someone would want badly enough to kill him for it?

I'll post here and on my website when this story goes on sale.

I've just started recording the first book in a cozy mystery genre called  The Red Shoelace Killer by Susan Sundwall.  It's the first in the Minnie Markwood series.  Terrific characters in this book, particularly Minnie.

I'll have more on this book later as recording progresses.   Gotta get back to my booth...

New short story available for sale on Audible!

My latest recording has been released on Audible.  It's a short story called The Fulness of Life by Edith Wharton.

A woman dies and discovers that the afterlife allows her to choose a soul mate for eternity if she felt she was denied one in life. After complaining that her husband never understood her and had many habits that annoyed her, she is introduced to another soul who seems to be her perfect match. Who will she choose? This story touches on ideas of different types of love and how our wants and our needs may be two very different things.

The story may be purchased from Audible here.

I'm currently working on a book, also by Edith Wharton, called Sanctuary.  I hope to have it in post production by late next week.
