A fun sci-fi short story now on Audible

I had the opportunity to record a classic sci-fi short story by William Tenn for Audible. Venus is a Man's World is a fun read.

"In the future, Earth is ruled by women and many of the men have fled to other planets. Ferdinand is a boy on a spaceship headed to Venus where the men are said to be plentiful. He's with his older sister, Evelyn, who decided to leave Earth in search of a husband. After Ferdinand stumbles on a stowaway named Butt Lee Brown, a battle of the sexes ensues. Satire and humor abound in this tale from William Tenn."

New recording (finally!) on Audible

Having a new roof put on your house and recording audio are two things that definitely do not mix.  I had to work on a couple of short projects in between the sounds of ripping, hammering, etc.  One hit Audible today via Spoken Realms:  Gretchen's Forty Winks by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

"A light, comedic short story from American author F. Scott Fitzgerald.

A young married couple with a baby is eking out a living while the husband, Roger, works to establish his own advertising company. His wife, Gretchen, is stunningly beautiful and unhappy with how much time Roger spends working.

After an evening with Roger's old friend, George Tompkins, who suggests that Roger needs more of a work/life balance, a flirtation begins between George and Gretchen.

How Roger decides to nip the relationship in the bud while meeting his career goal involves, among other things, a sleeping potion and a suitcase full of his wife's shoes."

Classic recording from The Online Stage

I had the pleasure of playing several small roles as a member of The Online Stage in their production of The Iliad & The Odyssey by Homer. This was a massive undertaking but it was great to be a part of it.

"The Iliad, set 9 years into the Trojan War, tells the story of the wrath of Achilles. The Odyssey tells the story of Odysseus as he wearily travels home from the war. The two epics provide the basis of Greek education and culture in the classical age. They have long remained among the most significant poems of European tradition. Produced here in full cast arrangement and narrated by Rob Goll, one can experience these age-old stories in a brand new way.

Featuring the voices of Rob Goll, Lance Rasmussen, Josh Innerst, Tyler Hyrchuk, Amanda Friday, Anna Grace, David Stifel, Jeff Moon, John Burlinson, Ted Wenskus, Lee Ann Howlett, Tom Saer, Nik Sliwerski, Marty Krz, Andy Harrington, Trisha Rose, Bob Gonzalez, Sydnee Fullmer, Stephen Indrisano, Lillian Rachel, Tomas Peter, Chris Marcellus, Russell Gold, Merete Mohs, Tim Sailer, Erin Grassie, Linda Barrans, Elizabeth Klett, Grace Keller Scotch, Ron Altman, Max Gallo, Andrew Coleman, Alan Weyman, and Michelle Marie.

This production is based on the prose translation by Samuel Butler."

My recording of a classic now on Audible

My latest solo recording is now for sale on Audible.  I really enjoyed recording this sweet story -- The Innocents by Sinclair Lewis.

"An older New York City couple, Mr. and Mrs. Seth Appleby, decides to leave the city for Cape Cod where they open a tea room. The tea room fails, but that's just the beginning of their adventures. With no money and no prospects, they set out as hobos and roam the countryside meeting people and gaining new experiences for the first time in their lives.

This lesser-known work by Sinclair Lewis explores universal themes of second chances, new beginnings, and being open to leaving one's comfort zone. The result is a charming tale of the discovery of inner resources the Applebys didn't realize they possessed."

New mystery collection now on Audible

Just released on Audible!  The Amelia Butterworth Mysteries by Anna Katharine Green comprises three of this classic writer's books.  I narrated The Circular Study. This production is by Voices of Today and published via Spoken Realms.

"Anna Katharine Green (1846-1935) was one of the first writers of detective fiction and a major precursor of more celebrated female crime writers like Agatha Christie and Dorothy L. Sayers.

She composed more than 30 major crime novels, her prime detective characters being policemen Ebenezer Gryce and Caleb Sweetwater and amateur sleuths Amelia Butterworth and Violet Strange.

The Amelia Butterworth Mysteries is a series of three novels featuring Amelia Butterworth teaming up with Ebenezer Gryce. Miss Butterworth is a nosy high-society lady whose wealth and lack of family give her plenty of free time in which to solve several Victorian-era crimes.

That Affair Next Door - narrated by Cate Barratt.

Lost Man's Lane - narrated by Terah Tucker.

The Circular Study - narrated by Lee Ann Howlett."

With the assistance of Miss Amelia Butterworth, Gryce must investigate the meaning of the meager clues, including the cries of a talking bird, in order to uncover what happened to the victim.  Solving this crime will involve several generations of two families.

A Dorothy Parker title now on Audible!

I can't resist a little Dorothy Parker now and then!  My latest recording on Audible is Men I'm Not Married To by the aforementioned Dorothy Parker.  This was produced in cooperation with Spoken Realms.

"In this story, by American writer Dorothy Parker, a woman gives a laundry list of men she's not married to. She also convincingly states the reasons why she is not and would not want to be married to the various men. Parker's wit and humor shine through as the eccentricities and foibles of the men are described."

Another full-cast production from The Online Stage on Audible!

I was privileged to play a small role in the latest production from The Online Stage in cooperation with Spoken Realms.  Abraham Lincoln by John Drinkwater is now available on Audible.  I play the role of Mrs. Otherly along with another unnamed woman.

"In survey after survey, Abraham Lincoln is universally ranked as the greatest of America's presidents, setting standards for honesty, courage, compassion and ethical responsibility. John Drinkwater's play was the British poet's first theatrical success, opening in England in 1918 to surprising acclaim and making its way to Broadway in 1919, to even stronger public enthusiasm. It was produced on radio by Orson Wells on August 15, 1938, on his program, The Mercury Theater on the Air. In 1924, a two-reel film version of the play was distributed nationwide, one of the very first sound films, and on May 26, 1952, the play was presented on television on the anthology series Studio One, with film icon James Dean in a very noticeable supporting role.

After a brief poetic prologue, the play depicts six scenes from Lincoln's life that illustrate key aspects of his remarkable character:

  • His acceptance of the Republican nomination for President
  • The outbreak of hostilities at Fort Sumter
  • Discussions with three very different individuals about the conduct of the war
  • The emancipation proclamation
  • The surrender at Appomattox
  • The assassination at Ford's Theater
Featuring Ben Stevens as Abraham Lincoln. Additional voices provided by Andrew Coleman, Linda Barrans, Larry Wilson, Ron Altman, Libby Stevenson, Jennifer Fournier, Peter Tucker, Andy Harrington, Joseph Tabler, Marty Kris, Jeff Moon, Russell Gold, Ted Wenskus, Richard Andrews, Nancy German, Lee Ann Howlett, and John Burlinson. Audio edited by John Burlinson."

Full-cast production of Little Women now available on Audible!

The cast of The Online Stage is proud to present our full-cast production of the beloved classic Little Women by Louisa May Alcott.  I was thrilled to play the role of the narrator.  This recording was produced via Spoken Realms.

"First published in 1869, Little Women is the story of four sisters growing up against the background of the American Civil War. Alcott wrote the book at the urging of the publisher, Thomas Niles, who was seeking a story about girls that would have popular appeal. Although it was commenced essentially as a children's book, it developed into something of a bildungsroman, which touches on more serious issues such as the difficulties faced by single-parent families, the death of a sibling, and fractured relationships.

The book was an immediate success at publication and has become a classic of young adult fiction. It has been adapted numerous times for presentation both on stage and on film.

Presented by the Online Stage. Narration by Lee Ann Howlett. Also featuring the voices of Amanda Friday, PJ Morgan, Tiffany Halla Colonna, Becca Maggie, Elizabeth Klett, Andy Harrington, Ron Altman, Ben Lindsey-Clark, Glenn Hascall, Nancy German, Maureen Boutilier, Jeff Moon, Jennifer Fournier, Miranda Hodges, Izzy Lindsey-Clark, Rebecca Thomas, Brett Downey, Sarah Hulslander, Chris Marcellus, Leanne Yau, Cate Barratt, Libby Stephenson, Marty Krz, and David Prickett. Audio edited by Elizabeth Klett and Michele Eaton."
