It had been almost three years since Linda and I took a little road trip to the Webster Flea Market. Duane was unable to go the last time but she went with us yesterday to shop there for the first time. I blogged about my last visit here. Linda and I thought the market was big three years ago but it seemed to have gotten quite a bit larger since then. There were certainly more vendors out in what's called 'the field' -- the best place for bargains on old items. You can really do a lot of walking at this place and the weather was great -- very cool in the morning and pleasant around noon.
This market is only open on Mondays. Their website is here and their Facebook page can be found here. During this time of the year, the market opens at 5am and runs until 3pm, although many of the vendors start to pack up well before 3:00.
We were well prepared. We dressed in layers, wore sneakers, and brought lightweight shopping bags. The weird thing about a market this big is that it can become mind-numbing after awhile. There are just so many vendors with tons of items. Because it was a national holiday --- MLK Day -- the crowd may have been larger than usual. So many people bring their dogs to this flea market. Many of them in doggy strollers. Lots of retirees seem to like the market along with tourists. There were many out of state license plates in the parking area. Great place to people watch. I would be remiss if I didn't mention that there were some sights that rivaled the 'People of Wal-Mart' page.
Linda saw many things that she liked but nothing that she just had to have. I considered a Wallace Nutting print but couldn't make up my mind so I only purchased a small pink Depression glass dessert plate. Duane did a little better. She bought a pair of tiny cups with saucers for her Delft collection, a couple of books, a tea infuser, and (her big purchase), a wood planer. She plans to make good use of the planer in finishing up remodeling her kitchen.
We stopped midmorning and had coffee and pastries. Then we had pizza for lunch before hitting the rest of the field vendors before calling it a day. The smell of food cooking reminds me a bit of going to a fair. Even though we were all tired, we had a fun day. A nice break from work.

Sounds like a great trip! Call me crazy, but the idea of owning a planer is something that runs through my head fairly frequently. Maybe I should start looking for one at a flea market myself. :)
ReplyDeleteIt was fun, Dana. My friend, Duane, is great with tools and has done much of the rehabbing of her little bungalow herself. She got really lucky finding such a nice planer!
